The Curse of Busyness: When "Too Much to Do" Keeps Us From What Matters Most

I started this blog with the intention of showing up consistently — to write, reflect, and share life honestly. But here I am, months later, realizing I fell off track pretty quickly.

Life has been full. Between work events, daily responsibilities, taking care of our home, and raising a baby, I just haven't made the time to be here and write. And as I sat with that — thinking about how busy I’ve been and why things haven’t gotten done — this came to mind:

Busyness kills.

It kills dreams.

It kills relationships.

It kills intention.

When we live in an “I’m SO busy” mindset, we end up missing out on the very things that deserve our full attention. We go through the motions, distracted, half-there — physically present but emotionally checked out.

When Busy Becomes the Default

Lately, I’ve noticed something unsettling. I’m so preoccupied with my to-do list that I can’t fully engage in the conversations right in front of me. I feel regret when I realize I missed a moment that could have held real depth — moments that could have impacted someone’s life — simply because I was consumed with what I needed to do next.

I miss small moments with my little one.Not because I don’t want to play or engage. But because I’m busy tidying up the mess instead of getting messy with him.

I worry about tomorrow’s commitments so much that I don’t say yes to what’s happening right in front of me today.

The Trap of Distraction

I believe this busyness isn’t just poor time management — it’s a spiritual attack.

Corrie ten Boom once said, “If the devil can’t make you sin, he’ll make you busy.”

That hits hard.

If the enemy can’t get us to trip up morally, he’ll get us to trip up mentally. He’ll distract us just enough to keep our eyes off the Father. And when we’re always chasing the next thing — even good things — we risk missing the best thing: living with God, in step with Him, fully present.

This mindset of hustle leads us to exhaustion, discouragement, even depression — all because the expectations of “busy” never get met. The finish line keeps moving.

But this isn’t how we were created to live.

Jesus Was Never in a Hurry

I’m reminded of Luke 8:40–56. Jesus was on His way to Jairus’ house to heal his daughter — a time-sensitive situation if there ever was one. The crowd pressed in around Him, slowing His steps.

And yet, when a woman with a bleeding condition reached out and touched the hem of His garment, Jesus stopped. He noticed her. He didn’t rush past her need, even though He was headed somewhere urgent.

He was aware.

He was present.

He was intentional.

That’s what I long for.

What If We Slowed Down?

What if, in the middle of our very real responsibilities, we slowed down just enough to notice the small things?

What if we trusted God to give us the strength, focus, and grace to do what needs to be done — but also made space to be fully here? With Him. With others. With ourselves.

I don’t want to miss the moments that matter most. And I don’t want “busy” to be the reason I do.

Reflective Questions:

  • What are the things you say “yes” to out of obligation rather than purpose?

  • Is there something (or someone) you've unintentionally neglected because of a full schedule?

  • Where can you slow down — even just a little?

I hope that this speaks to your heart, as it speaks to mine. Praying that God would help us all to be more present in our lives.

Here are moments where I've been practicing being more present!

With love,

Peyton
