A Day In My Life: How I Balance Faith, Family & Creativity

Every day looks the same but also completely different. If you know, you know. Routine is comforting, but life is unpredictable—especially when balancing motherhood, ministry, and everything in between. Some days I feel like I have it all together, and other days, I wonder how we made it through in one piece. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Here’s a little peek into a day in my life.

Morning: The Calm Before the Storm (Hopefully)

My husband, Trevor, is up and out early for work every morning, which means my day starts with my little guy, Theo. I try to wake up before him—key word: try. On my best mornings, I get up, shower, get dressed, let the dog out, and take care of a few household chores before making my sacred cup of coffee. If I can squeeze in some quiet time with my Bible before Theo wakes up, it’s a win.

Just the cutest, sweatiest sleeper!

Our church is currently going through the New Testament in a year, reading five chapters a week—one per day—with time for prayer and reflection. Going at this slow and steady pace has given me a whole new perspective. I’ve read these passages before, but this time, I’m actually absorbing them, noticing things I’ve never caught before. It’s a great way to start the day, anchoring my heart before the craziness begins.

Then, the real fun starts—waking Theo up, diaper changes, and making a quick breakfast. We tend to dillydally in the mornings, taking our time before heading out. After dropping him off at his Nana’s house, I head to work.

Work: Ministry, Chaos, and Laughter

I have the absolute joy of working at a church, and if you think working in ministry is peaceful and predictable… think again. Every day brings something new, and that’s what makes it so exciting. My coworkers are some of my best friends, so naturally, we spend a good chunk of time yapping (team bonding, obviously).

Then, it’s time to get to work. Some days, I’m deep in message prep for youth group—studying, praying, writing, and planning a lesson that will hopefully encourage and challenge my students. Other days, I’m creating games and activities (which sometimes means testing out Nerf guns or making a mess in the name of "fun"). There are always events to plan, errands to run, and, of course, balloon arches to make—because what’s a church event without a good balloon arch?

One of my favorite parts of ministry is getting to use my creativity in so many ways—whether it’s designing slides and graphics, writing messages, or brainstorming crazy youth group ideas.

Evening: Home, Dinner, and… Chores (Ugh)

After work, I pick Theo up, and we usually head straight home. The to-do list continues: making dinner, catching up on household chores, and pretending I’m going to do the laundry. (Spoiler: I won’t. Laundry is the actual worst, and I am always behind.)

Trevor gets home, and we swap stories from the day. I’m usually itching to start a new creative project, and he is usually begging me not to. (Fair. I tend to go all-in once I get an idea.)

Lately, I’ve been really into embroidery. I just got a light tablet to trace my own designs onto fabric, and I love how peaceful it is to stitch while reflecting on Scripture. I also love DIY projects, making signs with fun handwriting fonts, and—of course—experimenting in the kitchen. (If I go too long without trying a new recipe, something feels off.)

Our evenings are simple but sweet—playing with Theo, watching The Lion Guard or The Wiggles, and then winding down for bathtime and bedtime stories.

Bedtime: The Grandma Life

By the time Theo goes to bed, I’m done. Completely. I fully embrace my grandma status and happily crawl into bed at the same time he does. Trevor, on the other hand, is a night owl and stays up for several more hours. Honestly, I have no idea what he does. Probably playing video games, watching shows, or wondering why I don’t have the energy to stay up past 9 PM.

And just like that, another day is done.

Some days feel overwhelming, but when I step back, I see so much joy in the chaos. I get to spend my days serving in ministry, raising my son, and using my creativity in ways that bring me closer to God. Whether I’m studying the New Testament, stitching a verse into fabric, or brainstorming a crazy youth group game, faith and creativity are woven into everything I do.

I’d love to hear from you—what’s one way you creatively connect with God? Let me know in the comments! 😊

With Love,

Peyton
